Revisiting the 'MUM' Exercise

Welcome to the A new week and a new Vocal Exercise clip. We're going back to an oldie but goodie with the 'MUM' sound. Oh, so vocally delicious! It works on good vocal cord closure paired with a 'stingy' use of air so as to not promote pulling up chest register as we ascend in our range. I share several scale patterns that can be useful in your practice. 🎙️🗣️🎵🎹 #vocaltraining #voicelessons #vocalcoach #vocaltechnique #trainingthevocalathlete

The 'BLAH' Exercise : Dracula-style

Here's another vocal exercise for you to try out. We're utilizing the 'BLAH' syllable done with a darker sound imitating Dracula - something you can really sink your teeth into (see what I did there? 😝) Anyhoo, playing with this approach allows us to access a lowered larynx with a deeper, darker color accordingly. We have to coordinate breath, vocal fold closure, and resonance but in a playful way. Practicing this vocal quality isn't just good for the classical singers, by the way. Have fun with it. 🎙️🗣️🎵🎹 #voicelessons #vocaltraining #vocaltechnique #vocalcoach #trainingthevocalathlete

The Buzzy 'V-V-V'' to open 'AHH' Exercise

A new Vocal Exercise video for you as we enter autumn. We are moving from a semi-occluded sound to an open vowel - in this case, we begin with the Buzzy 'Vvvv' into 'AHH' on a 5 tone scale. The former sets up good balance of air flow and vocal fold closure that we work to maintain on the vowel that follows. Go give it a try. You can thank me later. 😁🎙️🗣️🎵🎹 #vocaltraining #voicelessons #vocalcoach #vocaltechnique

"MMMMMMM... That's Good!" - A New Warmup

A new Vocal Tip video for ya. I share a new warmup that I recently began using with my singers due to the epidemic of jaw tension that folks are experiencing now (who wouldn't with the constant craziness we're seeing around us nowadays?). "MMMMMN... that's good!" - it's really been helpful for my clients so I decided to share. 🎙️🗣️🎵 #MusicIsTheSacredArt #voicelessons #vocaltraining #vocaltechnique #vocalwarmup

Using the Pharyngeal 'AGH' Sound to Combat a Depressed Larynx

Today's Vocal Tip clip deals with the opposite issue of the previous video about using the hooty 'OO' to combat a high larynx. This time, the focus is on releasing a depressed larynx caused by a retracted tongue. The witchy pharyngeal 'AGH' is our tool of choice. The exaggeration is temporary and the goal is to be able to get a more natural balanced laryngeal position. Enjoy the wackiness of making the ugly sound - we all need fun nowadays. 🎙️🗣️🎵🎹 #trainingthevocalathlete #vocaltechnique #vocaltraining #voicelessons #voicelessons

Hooty 'OO' to Combat Singing with a High Larynx

Do you find that your larynx hikes up a lot as you climb in pitch? Well, this new Vocal Tip is for you. We can use a hooty 'OO' vowel to allow the voice box to lower naturally without pushing it down with the base of the tongue. Play around with this exercise and see how your voice responds. 🎙️🗣️🎵 #voicelessons #vocaltraining #vocaltechnique #singers #vocalcoach To book virtual voice lessons, contact me at earlharvillevox@gmail.com, earlvoxstudio.com, or (219) 269-0346. Pre-teaching Vocal Warmup

Here is a look into my vocal warmup routine on an average day of teaching and practice. I'm working from the presumption that I have slept well, have adequately hydrated, and am basically healthy physically. I will post a video of physical stretches that precede the vocalizing separately. #vocaltechnique #voicelessons #vocaltraining #EarlVOXStudio #vocalhealth

Ascending Agility Exercise

I'm back with another new vocal tip video. This is an agility exercise focusing on an ascending pattern. For a lot of people, it's easier to be agile while vocalizing downwards so this one can be a good tool to work on balancing out the voice. Go have fun with it. Remember to start the exercise slowly and with moderate volume to get accuracy and clarity before going faster. 🎙️ 🗣️ 🎵 #voicelessons #vocaltraining #vocaltechnique #vocalcoach

Revisiting the Vocal Cooldown

This new Vocal Tip revisits the topic of the vocal cooldown. It is essential for vocal longevity and should be taken as seriously as the warmup. 🎙️ 🗣️ 🎵 #singers #vocalathlete #vocaltechnique #vocaltraining #voicelessons

Laughing and Crying to Establish Breath Support? Why, YES!!

In today's new Vocal Tip, we will laugh and cry ourselves into a greater awareness of what muscular engagement feels like in our torso (i.e. support) as we warm up the voice. 🎙️🗣️🎵🎼 #vocaltips #voicelessons #vocaltraining #vocaltechnique #trainingthevocalathlete #voiceteacher4life #EarlVOXStudio #Blackmusiceducator #blackvocalcoach #gayvocalcoach #singers #voiceusers #actors #sing4yourlife #bassbaritone #MusicIsTheSacredArt

A Tribute to a Mentor: Dwight Davis

A lil storytime post about someone who poured into me & my talent, without whom I don't know if I would have ended being a musician. Dwight Davis taught music at Indiana University Northwest when I arrived there as a freshman nursing major and helped me get firmly on the road to my calling.
